The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has just confirmed it is to launch a consultation on automatic transmission vehicles that could see a number of changes to HGV and PCV driver licences.
The consultation will run until the 26th August 2013 and will propose, among other changes, an allowance for drivers taking a category C or D test in an automatic vehicle to also obtain a manual licence if they already hold a manual licence in another discipline.
The new Chief Executive of the DSA, Alastair Peoples, said: “Today’s manufacturers are producing safer, more energy efficient vehicles and the regulations need to change to allow these newer vehicles to be used for driving tests.”
He added: “If we don’t change the regulations, trainers and operators will find it increasingly difficult to find vehicles that meet the current statutory criteria for driving tests.”
