The number of people cycling in London is on the rise. Although cycling in the capital is getting safer, there are still too many fatalities involving HGVs and cyclists each year.
In fact more than half of cyclist deaths in London are caused by collisions with heavy goods vehicles. Consider too most cyclist and Heavy Goods Vehicle accidents happen when vehicles turn left at traffic lights or other junctions.
Although modern HGVs are fitted with numerous mirrors they do have blind spots, which need to be understood by other road users, including cyclists.
To help better understand an HGVs blind spot, TfL Transport for London has produced a YouTube video.
It is pretty compelling stuff and perfectly demonstrates what an HGV driver cant see from his nearside mirrors.
The message is, if lorry drivers and cyclists alike are aware of each other and behave responsibly then risk can be minimised.
